Meet Kala Grace, Head Instructor and Founder
Our founder and head instructor, Kala Grace, is a world-class professional surfer. He grew up surfing the North Shore and has been giving surf lessons since he was 15 years old.
Kala comes from a family of professional surfers, one of his uncles, Derek Ho, was the first Hawaiian world champion in 1993, and another, Michael Ho, won numerous North Shore competition titles.
Our philosophy at North Shore Oahu Surf School is to share our love and passion for surfing with all our clients, guaranteeing them the best possible experience.

Mitch was incredible with our group (ages 15, 16, and 21). He was professional, patient, and did a fantastic job helping them understand the techniques, they were all up and surfing in no time. One thing to note: the address listed initially took us to the wrong location, so make sure to double check before heading out. That said, Mitch was awesome, he called us right away and guided us to the correct spot without any stress. This ended up being the highlight of our kids’ first trip to Oahu. We are so glad we did it! If you can, I highly recommend booking the 2-hour session, it’s absolutely worth it.

What is covered in the first lesson?
In the first lesson, you’ll learn to stand up on a surfboard and ride some of the world’s best waves
– an experience you can’t get anywhere else.

What type of surfing lessons do you offer?
We offer beginner, intermediate and advanced lessons to individuals, couples, and groups. Regardless of age or skill level, we guarantee 100% satisfaction with your lessons.
Because our instructors are among the most experienced surfers on the North Shore, they know the waves better than anyone else and can guide you safely and successfully.
Where are you on Oahu?
We select a North Shore beach on the day of your lesson, depending on the waves and weather. Generally, we surf Chuns Reef and Puaena Point Beach Park, just a few miles from each other and located near Haleiwa town.
The day before your lesson, we’ll contact you by text or email with a meeting point. We’ll always take you to the beach with the best conditions.
What do I bring?
We provide your surfboard and all other needed gear. You only need to bring your swimsuit, sunscreen and towel!
What if I want to change my reservation?
You can change or cancel your reservation until 24 hours before your scheduled lesson time.
